Kermit the Frog

Thoughts on Kermit the Frog as He Celebrates His 71st Birthday

Kermit the Frog is 71 years old today. This birthday was chosen based on when Sam and Friends debuted. This was the show that introduced the world to Kermit the Frog in 1955. Since then, Kermit the Frog has brought his dream of “singing and dancing and making people happy” to the world. This has been on television, the silver screen, the stage, and social media.

At 71, Kermit the Frog is as beloved as ever. Recently, he appeared on a special production of The Muppet Show. This was believed to be a backdoor pilot. At this point, there have been no announcements on whether it was picked up for more episodes or a full series. Whatever happens with this show and The Muppets in the future, this special was a success. The next appearance for Kermit the Frog and The Muppets will be on May 26th, when Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets opens at Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World Resort.

While many things have changed in the world, Kermit the Frog has remained mostly the same. Other than some initial growth when he was a young frog, he has maintained the same look for decades. As is often the case with aging, his voice has changed a bit. The important things have not, though. Kermit the Frog continues to try to build people up and bring them together to pursue their dreams. Just as it has been for so many decades, Kermit and company’s dreams are all “about making people happy!”

Last year, Kermit the Frog gave a commencement speech at the University of Maryland, where creator Jim Henson once attended. During this speech, Kermit gave many nuggets of wisdom. These thoughts include:

  • “Life is not a solo act. No, it’s not. It’s a messy, delightful ensemble piece, especially when you’re with your people.”
  • “Always be on the lookout for old friends you’ve just met.”
  • “Rather than jumping over someone to get what you want, consider reaching out your hand and taking the leap side by side. Because life is better when we leap together.”
  • “Stay connected to your loved ones, stay connected to your friends, and most of all stay connected to your dreams.”
  • “Dreams are how we figure out where we want to go, and life is how we get there.”

While there may be debates about the exact date that is Kermit the Frog’s birthday, what can’t be debated is that he is the world’s most beloved frog. It also can’t be debated that the world is a better place because Kermit came along. As we celebrate Kermit the Frog today, take a moment to think about your loved ones and your dreams! Keep in mind those wise words heard at the end of The Muppet Movie:

Life’s like a movie, write your own ending
Keep believing, keep pretending
We’ve done just what we set out to do.
Thanks to the lovers, the dreamers, and you.
