Some Disney Content is Headed to Netflix

,

Since Disney+ debuted in 2019, Disney has worked hard to make it the go-to destination for Disney content. This led to Disney content not showing up on other streaming services, as it could previously be found. This is changing a little bit now. On Friday, Disney announced that it is licensing some content to Netflix. This includes the Ice Age films, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Will Trent, and other titles.

The move includes some new titles and some that have been around a while. It will generate some revenue for Disney and also interest in Disney content on a competitor’s streaming service. This could lead to them seeking out more Disney content on Disney+ or Hulu after discovering it on Netflix. An example of how this is working is with the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. The first two seasons will be on Netflix for three months, as part of a promotional window for the third season’s arrival on Disney+ on November 20th. All five Ice Age films are now also on Netflix ahead of the arrival of Ice Age: Boiling Point in theaters on February 5, 2027.

Along with promoting upcoming titles, this deal will also introduce Netflix viewers to other titles from across Disney’s studios and brands. There is quite a variety of titles that are included in the licensing deal, including Pixar’s Soul and Elio and Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Raya and the Last Dragon. These will arrive on Netflix early next year. Multiple series are also included in the deal. They include Felicity, Revenge, Army Wives, Fresh Off the Boat, and This Is Us. They join other series already on Netflix, including Grey’s Anatomy, Arrested Development, Scandal, and Black-ish.

While this does allow for greater visibility of Disney titles via Netflix, it doesn’t mean that they will be leaving Disney+ or Hulu. All of the titles coming to Netflix will continue to also be found on Disney+ and Hulu.

What do you think of this licensing agreement between Disney and Netflix? Do you think it is a good strategic move for Disney? Do you think it is good for consumers? Share your thoughts and opinions in the comments below!
