Southern California and the Disneyland Resort are currently in the midst of a fairly powerful heat wave, especially for October. With temperatures forecasted around 100 degrees Fahrenheit, it can be difficult to enjoy the Happiest Place on Earth while dealing with the heat. It isn’t impossible, however. Below is a guide for getting the most out of the Disneyland Resort during a heat wave. We hope these tips will be helpful. When temperatures are this high, they can be more than simply inconvenient; they can be unsafe if steps aren’t taken to mitigate the heat’s impact. Check them out below.

1. Daily Strategy & Pacing
- The Midday Escape: Adopt the Rope Drop → Midday Break → Night Owl rhythm. Get to the park early and knock out major attractions during the coolest hours (yes, they aren’t as cool as we’d like). Between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM, head back to the hotel for a nap or pool time, or duck into long, air-conditioned indoor experiences (see below).
- Reserve Lunch, Not Breakfast: Reserve sit-down, table-service dining for mid-afternoon (around 1:30 PM or 2:00 PM). It guarantees a guaranteed, air-conditioned sanctuary right when the asphalt is hottest.
- Enjoy the Evening Drop: Southern California desert climate generally means temperatures will drop once the sun goes down. If you’re staying late for World of Color, Fantasmic!, or fireworks, enjoy the coolness of the evening without the sun beating down!

2. Essential Gear & Packing List
- Hydration Arsenal: Bring insulated reusable water bottles. You can get free cups of ice water at any Quick-Service restaurant with fountain drinks, or use filtered bottle water refill stations throughout both parks. Pack electrolyte packets (like Liquid I.V. or Ultima) to replace lost salts.
- Personal Cooling: Neck-hanging fans or handheld misting fans, plus cooling towels (soak them in cold water, wring them out, and snap them to activate).
- Clothing: Breathable, light-colored cotton or moisture-wicking fabrics.
Daps Tip: Pack extra socks in your park bag. Swapping out sweaty or wet socks midday prevents painful blisters. - Sun Protection: Wide-brimmed hats or visors, UV-blocking sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen (bring a stick version for easy face touch-ups without greasy hands).
3. Top A/C Sanctuaries & Long Indoor Attractions
During the day, particularly in the afternoon, the following attractions can be a great way to get out of the heat and enjoy some air conditioning. In general, it is a smart idea to get out of the sun and into somewhere cool and relaxing to have an enjoyable and safe day when the temperatures are in triple digits!
Disneyland
| Location | Attraction / Space | Why It Works |
| Main Street, U.S.A. | Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln/Walt Disney – A Magical Life | Quiet, deeply air-conditioned, with comfortable theatre seats and a cool lobby museum. |
| Adventureland | Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room | Grab a Dole Whip, enjoy the shade of the lanai, and then enjoy this classic Disney show with audio-animatronic birds and amazing air conditioning. |
| Tomorrowland | Pixar Short Film Spotlight | Enjoy some classic Pixar short films in the Magic Eye theater. The full loop is around 20 minutes and in a wonderfully air-conditioned theater. |
| Fantasyland | It’s a Small World | A 15-minute gentle boat ride in full A/C. (Note: line is outdoors with filtered shade from trees, so use Lightning Lane if possible). |
| Mickey’s Toontown | Mickey’s House and Meet Mickey Mouse | Enjoy exploring Mickey’s house and its air-conditioning before meeting Mickey Mouse himself! |
| New Orleans Square | Pirates of the Caribbean | This is great if the queue isn’t too long, as the boat ride inside is long and air-conditioned! |
| Bayou Country | The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh | Usually short wait times and shade throughout the queue and air conditioning inside the queue. |
| Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge | Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance | The queue has misters before moving inside, where it is air-conditioned. The attraction itself is quite long and air-conditioned to allow for a respite from the heat. |
Disney California Adventure
| Location | Attraction / Space | Why It Works |
| Hollywood Land | Disney Animation Building | The ultimate cooling zone. Includes Animation Academy, Turtle Talk with Crush, and the giant main lobby screen room. |
| Hollywood Land | Mickey’s PhilharMagic | 12-minute 3D show in a dark, cold theater with high capacity. |
| Grizzly Peak | Soarin’ Around the World | Outdoor queue with misters and an indoor queue with air conditioning. This is an immersive airborne ride in full climate control. |
| Pixar Pier | Toy Story Midway Mania! | Indoor track ride with significant cooling inside the queue loading area. |
Note: There are also two main water attractions at the Disneyland Resort, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure in Disneyland and Grizzly River Run at Disney California Adventure. These can offer a respite from the heat while being splashed, but can also lead to discomfort afterwards in the heat.

4. Cooling Hydration & Treats Beyond Ice Cream
(Note: Ice cream cones melt in seconds and create a sticky mess. Opt for these instead!)
- Dole Whip Floats: Cold, refreshing, and pineapple juice provides quick hydration and energy.
- Frozen Slushies & Lemonades: Available at Maurice’s Treats (Disneyland) or Schmoozies! (DCA).
- Fresh Fruit: Grab chilled watermelon slices or pineapple spears from the fruit carts on Main Street or near Bengal BBQ.

5. Health & Safety First
- Watch for Warning Signs: Heat exhaustion can sneak up fast. If anyone in your group experiences dizziness, headache, nausea, or stops sweating, stop immediately.
- First Aid Stations: Located at the end of Main Street, U.S.A. (next to Plaza Inn) at Disneyland, and behind Buena Vista Street (next to the Chamber of Commerce) at DCA. They are fully air-conditioned, staffed by nurses, and provide free electrolyte packets, cold compresses, and a quiet place to lie down.
These are just a few tips for surviving the heat at the Disneyland Resort. As is always the case, the most important thing is to stay hydrated, especially when temperatures are hovering around the triple-digit mark! If you are visiting the Disneyland Resort during this heat wave, stay safe, have fun, and keep kind!
