Pixar’s Pete Docter Reveals Details About ‘Inside Out 2’

Recently during an earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Iger shared that a sequel is in the works for Inside Out. At the time, no details were revealed about this emotional movie. However, Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter has shared a little bit about Inside Out 2. The movie will again explore minds and emotions. This time, the film will be directed by Kelsey Mann, who this story really is very personal to.

“It was really poignant and very heartfelt, very personal to him, but also universal in that same way we were talking about before, having to do with… well, again, I don’t want to pitch his movie, but it’s got a real great heart to it, a really great core that is central to some of these new emotions showing up. It’s all connected.”

Inside Out was directed by Pete Docter. It came from a screenplay that he co-wrote with Meg LeFauve and Josh Cooley. It follows the story of a happy, hockey-loving 11-year-old named Midwestern girl named Riley. Her world becomes chaotic when she moves to San Francisco with her parents. The story follows how her emotions try to guide her through this difficult transition. They include Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), and Disgust (Mindy Kaling).

Inside Out 2 will continue to tell the story of Riley, who is now in her teenage years and now has a whole new host of “personified emotions.” Docter shared that during research for the first film, it was shared with them that there generally are between “five to 27 emotions.” In short, there will be a lot of possibilities for this story. Docter shared that Inside Out 2 will “be a little bit more truthful and broadening [the scope].”

Inside Out 2 is set to be directed by Kelsey Mann with  starring Amy Poehler and Phyllis Smith returning to voice their characters. It is scheduled to be released on June 14, 2024.
