Today Disney announced a new lineup for its upcoming movies. This comes after Disney’s Mulan and Marvel Studios’ Black Widow saw their release dates pushed back due to the coronavirus outbreak. With theaters still closed, these aren’t the only two movies in the Walt Disney Studios slate to get new release dates. In fact, just about all of the upcoming movies will be getting new release dates it appears.
Several films did maintain their current release dates. This includes Pixar’s Soul which is set to release on June 19, 2020. Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story and also The Last Duel will retain their release dates this year. Searchlight Pictures’s The Personal History of David Copperfield and Antlers, and 20th Century Studios’ Woman in the Window, and The New Mutants all currently do not have release dates. They will be released in the near future.
Other notable changes are that both Disney’s Jungle Cruise and Lucasfilm’s Indiana Jones 5 both have been pushed back another year. Disney’s Artemis Fowl will also now be released exclusively on Disney+.
The shakeup in the release schedule comes as not only theaters are closed but productions have had to shut down due to COVID-19. While people will not be able to go to theaters until it is safe to do so, movies also won’t be made. This could potentially lead to a gap in movie releases if studios were to begin releasing features on streaming services as had been rumored. Other than Artemis Fowl going directly to Disney+, The Walt Disney Company will continue to release theatrical features in the feature, albeit with a new schedule. The new release schedule will not only allow for these movies to be released in a traditional theatrical format, but it will also give time for studios to produce future movies once the industry begins to move forward again.
