On this day in 1971, Walt Disney World officially dedicated the Sunshine Pavilion and its Tropical Serenade attraction, five days after the resort’s opening. Sponsored by the Florida Citrus Growers, the ceremony was officiated by Governor Reubin Askew and citrus spokeswoman Anita Bryant. She sang two Sherman Brothers songs written for the pavilion, “The Orange Bird Song” and “Orange Tree.” Also featured was Orange Bird, the Florida Citrus Commission mascot who became synonymous with Magic Kingdom, the Sunshine Pavilion, and the Citrus Swirl.
