A new documentary is coming to Amazon that focuses on the story of Don Bluth. Don Bluth: Somewhere Out There will share the story of Bluth after he left Disney to start his own animation studio and to save traditional animation. This documentary is a chance for Don Bluth to tell his story from his perspective. It will include previously unseen footage, original animation artwork, and behind-the-scenes footage. It will explore the highs and lows of his journey personally, artistically, and commercially.
Before leaving Disney, Bluth actually worked there twice. After high school, he worked on Sleeping Beauty as an assistant. He left for a while, traveled the world, produced musicals at a local theater, earned a degree in English literature, and then worked at Filmation before returning to Disney. During his second stint at the company, he worked on Robin Hood, Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too, Pete’s Dragon, and then left Disney while working on The Fox and the Hound over creative differences. He went on to found Don Bluth Productions, his own animation studio.
Don Bluth: Somewhere Out There will be arriving on Amazon on November 20, 2026. It is directed by Dave LaMattina & Chad Walker and executive produced by Lavalle Lee. Check out the trailer here:
Don Bluth: Somewhere Out There Official Description
Before he defined childhood nostalgia and arcade history with Dragon’s Lair, An American Tail, The Land Before Time, and Anastasia, Don Bluth did the unthinkable: he walked away from Disney to wage an independent war for the soul of traditional animation. Weaving intimate modern conversations with hundreds of hours of never-before-seen personal archives, DON BLUTH: SOMEWHERE OUT THERE reveals the unvarnished story of a master craftsman caught between art and commerce, ego and faith, and the cost of building an empire on his own terms.
