Ankole Calf at Disney's Animal Kingdom

New Ankole Calf Joins Herd at Disney’s Animal Kingdom’s Kilimanjaro Safaris

A new Ankole cafe has joined the herd at Disney’s Animal Kingdom’s Kilimanjaro Safaris. Pictures of the new calf, named Cinnamon, were shown by Disney on social media on Tuesday morning. They show Cinnamon in the morning light with other members of the herd. The photos can be seen here:

The Ankole is a breed of African cattle that belongs to the broad Sanga cattle grouping of African breeds. They descended from an ancient species of cattle that once lived in the Nile Valley around 4,000 BC. Centuries later, the herds migrated with their owners further south into what is currently Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi. There, they gave rise to a number of African cattle breeds. One of these was the Ankole.

The Ankole are easily recognized at Disney’s Animal Kingdom on the Kilimanjaro Safaris by their distinctive horns. They can span up to 6 feet tip to tip! Although they look like they are heavy, they are actually composed of a honeycomb structure that is designed to let blood circulate and cool. Instead of weighing cattle down, the horns cool them down.

At Disney’s Animal Kingdom, there are several ways to see the Ankole. The first is while experiencing the Kilimanjaro Safaris attraction. Guests can also see them on the Wild Africa Trek or Savor the Savanna Tours. On top of that, they can be found grazing on the savanna at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.
