Earl of Sandwich Pop-Up Opens in Downtown Disney District

There are a lot of changes happening in the Disneyland Resort’s Downtown Disney District. As new restaurants open in the district, other restaurants are being refurbished, reimagined, or simply playing musical chairs. Earl of Sandwich is one of those restaurants. Today it was announced that Earl of Sandwich has opened a new pop-up location in Downtown Disney District.

The new location for this Earl of Sandwich is found at the west end of Downtown Disney District. It is around the corner of Star Wars Trading Post. This is across from the new stage, lawn, and Din Tai Fung in Downtown Disney District. The new pop up location will offer Earl of Sandwich signature sandwiches, handcrafted wraps, salads, and more!

This new location is a temporary one for Earl of Sandwich while its permanent home. The location it has been residing in at the other end of Downtown Disney District will be the future home of Porto’s. At some point, this building will be demolished to make way for a new building for Porto’s.

Earl of Sandwich initially opened in the Downtown Disney District in 2012. The original location was previously Compass Books. The sandwich shop has lore that says it dates back to 1762 (the year the sandwich was invented). Earl of Sandwich opened its first restaurant in 2004. The story of Earl of Sandwich, according to the company, is as follows:

In 1762, John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich®, invented the meal that changed dining forever. As the story goes, he was playing cards and did not want to leave the gaming table to eat. He asked for a serving of roast beef to be placed between two slices of bread so he could eat with his hands. Thus, the Sandwich was born.

Who could be better to continue the tradition of the sandwich than the descendants of its inventor? In 2004, Lord John Montagu, the 11th Earl of Sandwich® and his son, the Honorable Orlando Montagu, direct descendants of the inventor of the sandwich, partnered with Robert Earl, founder and CEO of Planet Hollywood®, to launch the Earl of Sandwich® restaurants.
