Acting legend Paul Giamatti has joined the cast of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. He will be a recurring guest star. He will also apparently be the villain. StarTrek.com revealed today that Giamatti’s character will be the “season’s antagonist — a man with an ominous past connected to one of the Academy’s cadets.”
The casting of Giamatti in the new original Star Trek series that takes place after the events of the recently ended Star Trek: Discovery comes after the recent announced that Academy Award-Winning Actress Holly Hunter had joined the cast. She will be playing the head of the academy.
“Sometimes you’re lucky enough to discover that one of the greatest actors alive is also a huge Star Trek fan, and meeting Paul was one of those miraculous moments for us,” said co-showrunners and executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau. “The sheer delight with which he dove in on Starfleet Academy is only surpassed by the gratitude we feel about him joining our incredible cast.”

Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau both serve as co-showrunners and executive produce the series. They are joined by executive producers Gaia Violo, Aaron Baiers, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Jenny Lumet, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Frank Siracusa and John Weber. The series premiere episode is written by Gaia Violo. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is produced by CBS Studios in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment.
An exact release date for Starfleet Academy has not been shared at this time. The rest of the cast also has not been shared. However, this could be coming very soon as it seems that things are beginning to ramp up for the series. It is known that a very large set for the academy is being constructed, however. It is also known that the Starfleet cadets won’t be confined just to the academy and there will be space travel involved. Presumably this will be as the new young heroes face off against Giamatti’s character.
