Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort are both saying goodbye to the Genie+ service this summer. This does not mean the services it offers are going away, however. Instead, a new service will be arriving called Lightning Lane entry. Below is a look at how the Lightning Lane system will work, along with other offerings at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resorts.
Walt Disney World Resort
Starting on July 24, the Disney Genie+ service will become the Lightning Lane Multi Pass and individual Lightning Lane will become Lightning Lane Single Pass. Along with the new names, there will be some updates to the service. They include:
- Make Lightning Lane plans ahead of a trip to Walt Disney World Resort
- Choose experiences and times prior to purchasing
- Book Lightning Lane passes for multiple vacation days, all in a single day
Disney revealed the following information about the new system:
Lightning Lane Multi Pass
Guests may make up to 3 Lightning Lane selections in a theme park in advance of their visit when purchasing a Lightning Land Multi Pass. They will be able to choose available times when making selections. On the day of the visit, once a selection is used, the My Disney Experience app will show availability to make another selection.
Lightning Lane Single Pass
Lightning Land Single Pass is basically the same as an individual Lightning Lane. Guests can secure a time to ride a higher demand attraction. However, now guests will be able to make a selection and purchase in advance instead of only on the day of.
Planning Ahead
Guests who are staying at Disney Resort hotels or other select hotels will be able to plan Lightning Lane passes of any kind up to 7 days in advance. They can do this for their entire trip (up to 14 days long). Other guests will be able to plan Lightning Lane passes up to 3 days in advance.
The advance windows will allow for guests to secure access to some of their “must-do” rides and experiences. This will also be in a timeline that allows them to choose rides and attractions after they have already booked dining reservations and made other plans for their trip.
Guests will be allowed to purchase a Lightning Lane Multi Pass, a Lightning Lane Single Pass, or both. The app is also scheduled to be updated to make it quicker and easier for the purchasing of a plan. This will allow guests to do so with fewer steps and there will be a new option to purchase Lightning Lane Single Pass and Lightning Lane Multi Pass in one single transaction.
Disney says that the goal of the new Lightning Lane passes will be to blend features from the current Genie+ and individual Lightning Lane services along with those of the previously offered FastPass+ service. This is said to give guests the ability to plan ahead and remove some of the hassle of planning during a vacation.
More information about the new Lighting Lane passes can be found on the Walt Disney World Resort website.
Disneyland Resort
Disneyland Resort will also switch names to Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Lightning Land Single Pass starting on July 24th. However, this will be the extent of the change for the Disneyland Resort. Guests will continue to purchase, select, and also redeem Lightning Lane passes the same was as the system that is currently in place.
Disney Genie
Disney Genie will continue to be complimentary on both the Disneyland app and My Disney Experience app. Both of these apps continue to get upgraded with new features coming on line for ease of use.
