Jeff Bridges Returning to the Grid in ‘Tron: Ares’

Jeff Bridges, who has been a part of the Tron franchise since the beginning, is returning to be in Tron: Ares. The Walt Disney Studios posted a photo of Bridges reading the script for the film today. This comes after Bridges confirmed on Film Comment podcast that he would be returning to the franchise.

“I’m heading off this Saturday to play a part in the third installment of the ‘Tron’ story,” Bridges said during the Film Comment podcast. “Jared Leto is the star of this third one. I’m really anxious to work with him. I’ve admired his work.”

What Bridges’ role in this film, starring Jared Leto as Ares, isn’t known. At the end of the Tron: Legacy, Bridges’ Kevin Flynn re-absorbs Clu and erases both of them from the virtual world. This action allowed his son Sam (Garrett Hedlund), and Quorra (Olivia Wilde), a sentient digital human, to escape back into the real world. It is possible that Bridges will be playing a new character or appear in flashbacks. Of course, anything is possible and he could once again be playing Kevin Flynn that somehow is back.

About Tron: Ares

Jared Leto stars as Ares in Tron: Ares. He is a computer program that is sent from the digital realm into the real world on a dangerous mission to bring artificial intelligence to humans. Clearly, there is some level of conflict in this. Leto will be joined by actors Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, and Gillian Anderson.

Here is the official description:

Tron: Ares follows a highly sophisticated Program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings.

The 2025 release of Tron: Ares continues a story that began in 1982 when the original Tron was released. Starring Jeff Bridges, it was about a video game programmer who entered a digital world he created. In 2010, Tron: Legacy followed his son, played by Garrett Hedlund, doing the same thing. Now, the tables will be turning and a character from the digital world will be entering the real world. It is expected that most of the film will take place in the real world instead of the digital.

Sean Bailey, Jeffrey Silver, Justin Springer, Jared Leto, Emma Ludbrook, and Steven Lisberger are all producers of this film. Russell Allen is an executive producer.
