Today a new movie based on The Mandalorian was announced by Star Wars. Called The Mandalorian & Grogu, it will be directed by Jon Favreau and go into production sometime in 2024. It will be produced by Favreau, Kathleen Kennedy, and Dave Filoni.
“I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created,” said Favreau. “The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”
“Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen,” added Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm.
This is not the only feature film that is in development for the Star Wars universe. It will be the first, however. It will be followed by films from Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold, and Dave Filoni. This will explore the future of the Jedi as Rey seeks to rebuild the Jedi order, the origin of the Jedi thousands of years before the events of the original Star Wars trilogy, and also the culmination of the stories being told around The Mandalorian respectively.
This new Mandalorian does not replace the movie that will be directed by Dave Filoni. Instead, it will be a different story that comes ahead of the one that Dave Filoni’s movie will cover. A release date and timeline have not been announced for The Mandalorian & Grogu at this point.
