Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be the last in the franchise to feature the current Guardians of the Galaxy team. On Friday, director James Gunn confirmed this news. The current Guardians team includes Star-Lord, Gamora, Rocket, Groot, Drax, Mantis, Nebula, and also now Thor. This does not, however, include the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special which is expected to arrive at the end of the year. Its story takes place before Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
“The movie is incredibly big, it’s so so so big and dark and different than what people might be expecting it to be,” Gunn said. “This is the end for us, this is the last time people will see this team of Guardians.”
The news came from an interview Gunn did with Deadline’s Hero Nation podcast on Friday. Along with acknowledging that this movie is the end of the line for this crew, Gunn also shared that filming through Omicron has been a challenge. He confirmed also that the cast and crew are vaccinated.
“I just want to be true to the characters and true to the story and I want to give people the wrap up they deserve for the story,” Gunn shared about the film.
The Guardians have appeared in other movies outside of their own first two films. They also appeared in Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. They are also set to appear in Thor: Love and Thunder.
Thor: Love and Thunder is set to be released on July 8, 2022. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will arrive in theaters on May 5, 2023.
