Avatar Takes Top Spot at Global Box Office, Marvel Celebrates!

Avatar has again taken the crown as the top movie at the Global Box Office of all time and Marvel is happy about it. This weekend Avatar was re-released in China and through Sunday it was estimated that the film now has garnered $2.8B versus Avengers: Endgame‘s $2.797B. Ironically, both movies are now owned by Disney after its acquisition of 20th Century Fox.

In response to Avatar reaching this new milestone, Marvel Studios tweeted “We love you 3000.” This is a reference from Avengers: Endgame. The official Avatar account quote retweeted this with a heart emoji.

Over the weekend Avatar took the top spot as it gained $12 million over the course of two days being re-released in China. This closed the approximately $7.8 million gap between Avatar and Avengers: Endgame. The official Avatar twitter account also tweeted saying thanks to, “our fans in China for coming out to see Avatar on the big screen this weekend! This crown belongs to Na’vi Nation – it couldn’t have happened without you.”

The tradition of competing movies congratulate each other on their successes goes back quite some time. In 1977, Steven Spielberg congratulated George Lucas with ads when Star Wars overtook Jaws. Fast forward a few decades and Lucas paid it forward by congratulating James Cameron when Titanic took over the top spot. Titanic continued to hold the top spot until 2019 when Avengers: Endgame took the title surpassing both Titanic and the then top movie Avatar.

Currently, James Cameron is working on sequels to Avatar. The next one is scheduled to be released in December of 2022.
