‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ Continues to Break Records at the Box Office

Avatar: The Way of Water continues to break records and pass up other movies at the box office. It is now the seventh-strongest opener of all time at the box office. The movie has grossed $1.708 billion globally, passing up Jurassic World’s $1.67 billion. This comes just four weeks after being released in theaters on December 16, 2022.

The film has brought in $517 million in North America and $1.19 billion overseas. Internationally, it is now the fifth-strongest movie at the box office. It comes in after Avatar, Avengers: Endgame, Titanic, and Avengers: Infinity War. Globally, it also was the strongest movie of 2022. In the post-pandemic box office, the film only is behind Spider-Man: No Way Home. This film currently sits as the sixth most successful movie of all time. If Avatar: The Way of Water passes $2 billion at the global box office as it is expected to, it will also pass Spider-Man: No Way Home which came just shy of that number.

Only five movies have ever passed the $2 billion mark at the box office. This includes:

  • Avatar – $2.9 billion
  • Avengers: Endgame – $2.79 billion
  • Titanic – $2.2 billion
  • Star Wars: The Force Awakens – $2.069 billion
  • Avengers: Infinity War – $2.04 billion

James Cameron directed both Avatar and also Titanic. He may soon have a third movie in the top five movies that also happen to have passed the $2 billion mark with Avatar: The Way of Water. If things continue to go as Cameron has planned, there will be more Avatar movies on the horizon and potentially more chances for him to break the $2 billion mark at the box office.
