From director Jason Reitman and producer Ivan Reitman, comes the next chapter in the original Ghostbusters universe. In Ghostbusters: Afterlife, when a single mom and her two kids arrive in a small town, they begin to discover their connection to the original ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind. The film is written by Jason Reitman & Gil Kenan.
So What’d You Think?
First off, this is a solid trailer. Jason Reitman and his team have showcased a completely new story with a more serious vibe to it (currently) that also feels like it is in-world with the original film(s). The trailer sets up the story of a mother and her two kids arriving in the small town without a lot of hope only to discover a big secret left behind by their grandfather. Judging by the looks of the kids, it is fairly safe to bet that the grandfather being referenced was Egon. This would make sense as actor Harold Ramis who portrayed Egon Spangler died in 2014 and this would be a good way to continue the story. This is important because much of the original cast is signed on to appear in this film.
One of the things this trailer sets up well is that while this movie is a continuation of the story of the original, it isn’t just a redo. It has its own tone and personality. Judging by what is being seen so far, it will be more serious and more adventurous and less comedic than the original. However, this could be a marketing sleight of hand as well. This movie also has diverged from the original as well by putting the setting in the middle of nowhere and focusing on kids instead of adults.
With all these differences though, there are still a lot of connections to the past. The most obvious connections are the ghost trap and Ecto-1. However, there were also some Ghostbuster suits hanging in a closet at one point and some other tech that sharp-eyed fans will recognize from the original film. The obvious clips on the television of the original Ghostbusters also continues to build the bond between the original films and this one. The one thing that isn’t there? The Ghostbusters theme is not played. It will be interesting to see if it appears at all in the film.
Overall, the first trailer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife is a really awesome trailer! I am looking forward to going back and watching it several more times. If I wasn’t already excited about this film (which I was), I definitely am now! This film just feels right and feels like coming home to one of my favorite stories/movies! It also feels like a good way to move the franchise forward. They keep it rooted in the foundation of the original film and update things in a respectful way that will connect with original fans and probably draw in a whole new fan base of Ghostbusters fans!
