This weekend Ghostbusters began the celebration of its 35th anniversary during the first ever Ghostbusters Fanfest. The celebration will continue for an entire year and include new toys, collectibles, fashion and apparel, theatrical, live events, music, gaming, home entertainment, and publishing. All of this will lead up to a new Ghostbusters movie that will be released in 2020.
At the Fanfest, director and co-writer Jason Reitman revealed some more details about the upcoming Ghostbusters film. Perhaps the most exciting news to come out of a panel on the film is that Sigourney Weaver, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Bill Murray are all involved with the film in one way or another. While it hasn’t been directly confirmed that they are in the movie, Reitman cryptically said:
“Sigourney has read the screenplay…Dan has read it…Ernie’s read the script…Bill Murray has read the script.”
Recently Weaver confirmed that she would be returning to the role of Dana Barrett that she portrayed in the first two films. It would make sense that Aykroyd, Hudson, and Murray would also return for this film. It would make sense for them to return in their original roles but nothing is impossible.
Reitman also confirmed that he did call “all the originals” to create an “advisory board of people who worked on the original film.” This is to confirm that this movie is done right. “We wanted to make a love letter to the original movie,” Reitman said.
Jason Reitman is the son of Ivan Reitman, the original Ghostbusters director. He was actually not sure about directing the film until the image of a 12-year old girl with a proton pack came to mind.
“This character came to me, and she was a 12-year-old girl. And I don’t know who she was or why she popped into my head, but I saw her with a proton pack on her back, and the story began to form in my head…over many years. And it started to grow and all of a sudden, it was a family. And I knew this was a movie I needed to write and I reached out to my writing parter Gil Kenan, and we sat down and started writing this movie.”
The sequel was announced earlier this year and continues to gain momentum as the year moves forward. A teaser was released and three new cast members that mark a new generation of Ghostbusters cast members have been announced. Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things), Carrie Coon (Gone Girl), and Mckenna Grace (Gifted) have been announced. It is thought that one of their characters will be connected to one of the original cast members in one way or another.
The Ghostbusters sequel is set to arrive in theaters on July 10, 2020. What do you think about a return to the franchise with such a close connection to the original? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
