Two roles were given out to an actor and actress today regarding some upcoming Marvel projects. The first confirmed is Dr. Strange will be played by Benedict Cumberbatch. This has been rumored for a little while now, and also surrounded with some dispute. But, I think Cumberbatch will bring a sophistication to the role that is sometimes missing in the comics.
Dr. Stephen Strange was a surgeon until a car accident crippled his hands and career. He turns to mystic arts and becomes sorcerer supreme in the Marvel universe. It may sound basic, but the character is a complex one, having to battle arrogance early on in his career. He also has had to tread a line of not using dark arts, so think jedi vs. sith internally. At other times, Strange can be very stoic and…well….mystic. I think Cumberbatch will bring all of this into the character. He can be very fun at times, while at others can be very serious. There are not many others I can think of to fulfill this role.
Krysten Ritter will star as Jessica Jones in an upcoming Netflix only series. Jones is a super hero that has been in the ranks of the Avengers, and the wife of Luke Cage. Jones has been a detective as well, and took on this role to help others, but not keep the super hero job. Just a whole side note: Jones got her powers while on a family vacation to Walt Disney World. Anyway, back to the casting story.
Ritter is an actress that has been in a variety of movies and television shows. Most notable tv roles were in Don’t Trust the B- in Apartment 23 and Gilmore Girls. As far as film roles, she’s been in Confessions of a Shopaholic and She’s Out of Your League. She is a talented actress with a lot of experience. My impression, though, is that she’s had a lot of sidekick and sarcastic enforced roles. Whether this will fit a super heroine, even a feisty one, will have to be seen for me. To carry a Marvel show, I feel like you need someone that can show a wide range of emotions, and I’m not sure if this fits Ritter.
However, this casting has been reported through many websites, but not Netflix or Marvel. Is it a sure thing? Not yet. But, it seems to be really close to being a reality.
And, let us know what you think!
