Since 2004, Simon Kinberg has been working on a trilogy. What this trilogy was focused on has been unknown until now, apparently. It appears that the next era of Star Wars could see a galaxy far, far away returning to the Skywalker Saga. The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Kinberg is working on the next chapter of the Skywalker Saga. It is also reporting that Jon Watts, the director behind the incredibly successful Tom Holland-led Spider-Man trilogy of films, is attached to direct the first installment of this film.
If things continue as they have in the past, this means that Jon Watts would be directing Episode X in the Skywalker Saga. This is the series of Star Wars films that focus on the family of Luke and Anakin Skywalker. At the end of The Rise of Skywalker, Rey also joined this family. If things go as is being reported, Daisy Ridley will be returning as Rey Skywalker in this new trilogy in one way or another.
Jon Watts & Star Wars
Jon Watts is no stranger to Star Wars. He previously co-created and co-wrote the Star Wars series Skeleton Crew. This brought an Amblin feel to the world of Star Wars. The Daps Magic team thought it was a solid series and would love to see a second season of it. With the focus appearing to be back on the Skywalkers, this may not happen anytime soon.
The Hollywood Reporter reached out to Lucasfilm for comment. They were not given any. It does report that the film is in development; however, it has not been greenlit by Disney yet.
Looking Forward
The main focus of Lucasfilm is currently on Star Wars: Starfighter. Directed by Shawn Levy, it stars Ryan Gosling and is set to hit theaters on May 28, 2027. Traditionally, Lucasfilm has had challenges with directors and getting films across the finish line. The choice of Jon Watts, a known commodity in the world of Star Wars and geekdom, could help change this track record. It is also possible that with new leadership at Lucasfilm and The Walt Disney Company that the dynamic between studio and director has changed as well. In the last couple of years, Dave Filoni has replaced Kathleen Kennedy as President of Lucasfilm, and Josh D’Amaro has taken on the role of CEO at Disney, replacing Bob Iger.
At this point, there isn’t a lot known about what this future film and trilogy will specifically be about. Since it hasn’t been greenlit yet, it might be nothing. There has been talk about it potentially covering the rebuilding of the Jedi Order. At this point, it is all speculative, though. There is new leadership and potentially new direction for Star Wars so anything could happen.
Confirmed Dates
For now, what is known is that the second season of Ahsoka will be arriving on Disney+ on January 20, 2027. This will be followed by the original Star Wars in theaters on February 19, 2027. Star Wars: Starfighter on May 28th. There are other projects that have been announced, but no dates are attached to them currently.
