Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man Coming to Captain America 3?

Robert Downey Jr. to appear in Captain America 3

It looks like Iron Man isn’t hanging up his suit quite yet. Variety is reporting that Robert Downey Jr. is in final negotiations to appear in a major capacity for the upcoming Captain America 3. The addition of Tony Stark to the Captain America stand-alone films is said to be instrumental in bringing the “Civil War” storyline to the Marvel films’ over-arching storyline.

The Civil War storyline will alter the course of the Avengers as a fundamental disagreement erupts between Tony Stark and Captain Steve Rogers about the Superhero Registration Act. The Superhero Registration Act would force any being with superhero abilities to register with the United States government and to act as a police force for authorities. Basically a non-voluntary draft for supers to help supplement an overwork team of Avengers? Perhaps…. Exactly how that will play out will probably be revealed in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Tony Stark is staunchly for this thinking it will help better society and mankind. Captain Steve Rogers is completely against it as it is an infringement of civil liberties. Conflict ensues and Captain America and others find themselves on the run and battling for freedom against Stark and his allies. Who would have guessed that Tony Stark could potentially become a bad guy of sorts!? Captain America 3 will thrust the Marvel universe into its next phase of movies. This will also open lots of doors for new subplots and heroes. All of these events will carry Iron Man through Avengers 4 it is sounding like. It also should be noted that it appears that the Russo brothers are currently also in negotiations to direct Avengers 3 and Avengers 4.

The Civil War storyline first appeared in the Marvel comic books in 2006. The implementation of this storyline will be absolutely fascinating for fans of every level. Knowing how Marvel likes to connect everything, it’ll be interesting to see how and where S.H.I.E.L.D. ends up with all of this (and what will happen with Director Coulson??).  One thing is for sure, there will be lots of fun conversation and speculation over the coming months and years about the future of these films.

What do you think will happen? Let’s get this conversation started in the comments section below!

Captain America 3 is scheduled to hit theaters on May 6, 2016.

Make it a GREAT day!

  1. I think this is fascinating! I love these movies and have no background in the comics. I am amazed at the strategic creativity with the intertwined plot lines. I also enjoy discussions and speculations with the avid Marvel fans. I am on Team Black Widow! She deserves her own spotlight movie!

    1. Yea, they really do a fantastic job of bringing all the stories together in this giant web of awesome. :)

On the Black Widow topic… was a little surprised that they announced a Captain Marvel movie instead of a Black Widow for the first female stand alone movie from Marvel yesterday. Fingers crossed that she still gets one!
