On this day in 1941, ‘Dumbo’ debuted in theaters. Based on a story by Helen Aberson-Mayer and Harold Pearl, the tale follows Jumbo Jr., a baby circus elephant born to Mrs. Jumbo. He is ridiculed and dubbed “Dumbo” because of his enormous ears. After he is separated from his mother, his friend Timothy Mouse helps Dumbo believe in himself and fulfill his true potential. ‘Dumbo’ was both a critical and box office success, helping Disney regain financial security. The film won an Oscar for Best Music: Scoring and was later added to the National Film Registry. [85 years ago in 2026]
