A Great Big Beautiful Reimagining for the Carousel of Progress

A Great Big Beautiful Reimagining for the Carousel of Progress

Change is coming to Tomorrowland, and it is a great big beautiful one.

Following a massive announcement from Walt Disney Imagineering, Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress at Magic Kingdom will close on July 6, 2026, for a total reimagining before reopening to guests in 2027. The attraction will be updated with entirely new time periods, state-of-the-art technology, and a brand-new introduction.

For some classic Disney traditionalists, news of an overhaul to a passion project of Walt Disney himself might bring a brief moment of anxiety. But here at Daps Magic, we look at things through a lens of optimism and a “Culture of Kindness.” When you dive into the details shared by Chris Beatty (Portfolio Executive Creative Director at Walt Disney Imagineering), it becomes beautifully clear: this update isn’t erasing history—it is fulfilling the attraction’s ultimate purpose.

On this week’s episode of the Daps Magic – Disney and Positive Stuff Podcast, we break down every single act of the new show, explore its historical roots, and discuss why this evolution is exactly what Walt Disney would have wanted.

Progress is Designed to Celebrate Change

As Chris Beatty so perfectly shared on the Disney Parks Blog:

“Carousel of Progress was designed to celebrate change, not to stand still. As Imagineers, we now have the great responsibility of keeping Walt’s ideas of innovation and forward-looking spirit alive as we continue building the attraction’s future together.”

The Carousel of Progress has never been a static museum piece. When it debuted at the 1964-1965 New York World’s Fair, it was a showcase for cutting-edge, rapid technological advancement. The current 1990s-based “modern” finale has inadvertently turned the attraction into a historical piece for two separate eras. By shifting the timeline forward, today’s families will have personal connections to the intermediate eras, making the grand leap into the future feel completely earned and relatable.

Bringing Walt Home: The New Intro Scene

The reimagining will begin with an ultimate tribute to the man who started it all. Following his debut in Walt Disney – A Magical Life at Disneyland, a brand-new Walt Disney Audio-Animatronic figure will introduce the Carousel of Progress!

The scene is inspired by the 1964 television special Disneyland Goes to the World’s Fair. To bring this to life, Imagineers are meticulously sourcing and replicating specific props from that historic broadcast, including:

  • A prototype Tiki bird
  • The iconic Tower of the Four Winds model
  • A classic doll from it’s a small world

This opening moment anchors the entire experience in Walt’s enduring belief in the power of progress before handing the stage over to our favorite theater-dwelling family.

A Look at the New Acts and Decades

When the attraction first opened, it looked back roughly 60 years to the dawn of the 20th century. Keeping to that brilliant framework, the new iteration will start 60 years back from today: the 1960s.

Act 1 – The 1960s (Summer of 1969)

The Carousel family gathers around the living room television to watch one of humanity’s greatest milestones: the historic Apollo moon landing. It captures the exact spirit of awe and possibility that belongs in Tomorrowland.

Act 2 – The 1980s (Halloween Night, 1985)

For the very first time in the attraction’s history, Sarah is taking center stage! She will lead the scene, sharing how the biggest and best gadgets of the 1980s are making everyday life easier for the family. Meanwhile, John is out on the porch handing out candy, and Uncle Orville makes his triumphant, privacy-deprived return to the bathtub.

Act 3 – The New Millennium (New Year’s Eve, 1999)

The family navigates a massive modern cultural connection: the dawn of the internet. Expect plenty of fun family dynamics here—Grandpa will already be nodding off before the countdown to 2000, and Grandma will be secretly sneaking the television over to watch professional wrestling when no one is looking!

Act 4 – The Possible Future

The final scene brings us into an out-of-this-world future home, complete with space travel and a helpful robot assistant. Best of all, Imagineers looked directly at original concept sketches by Disney Legend John Hench to inspire this beautiful tomorrow.

Through every single leap in time, the Sherman Brothers’ iconic anthem, “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow,” will continue to serve as the musical connective tissue between scenes.

A History of Continuous Evolution

If history teaches us anything, it’s that the Carousel has always spun forward.

  • The 1950s: The concept began as Edison Square and a walkthrough drama called Harnessing the Lightning for Disneyland. It established the core theme: technology changes, but people stay the same.
  • The 1960s: Reworked for the New York World’s Fair as General Electric’s Progressland, introducing the rotating theater system.
  • The Moves & Script Changes: The ride moved to Disneyland in 1967 with a refreshed Progress City finale, and later moved to Magic Kingdom in 1975. It has seen multiple scripts, different voice actors, and even a completely different theme song (The Best Time of Your Life) for two decades before the original Sherman Brothers track was restored in 1994.

Change isn’t a disruption to the Carousel of Progress; change is the tradition.
