In 2024, it was revealed that Disneyland’s Autopia would be going electric. This came as welcome news to anyone who has stood next to these wonderful little vehicles and has been less-than-charmed by the fumes that emanate from them. Initially, it was thought that these new electric cars would be arriving sometime in 2026. Now it has been revealed by the Disneyland Resort to the Orange County Register that it will instead be happening in early 2027. The change comes as part of an agreement Disney has with the California Air Resources Board to retire the current gas-powered vehicles early next year.
Autopia opened at Disneyland in 1955 with the park. The original cars were designed by Imagineer Bob Gurr, who also recently stated that he was all for updating the attraction to get rid of the gas engines. “Get rid of those God-awful gasoline fumes,” Gurr said to the Los Angeles Times. Currently, Disney is working on the design, engineering, and testing of a fully electric vehicle prototype. Disney will share more information about the future of this beloved Tomorrowland attraction in the near future. It is possible that an announcement could be made this summer at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event.
