Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

GUIDE: ‘Star Trek’ Releases in 2025

It has been an exciting era for Star Trek fans. In recent years, Admiral Picard reunited with his crew of Enterprise-D to save the galaxy, new adventures were introduced with Captain Pike aboard the Enterprise, a new time period of Star Trek history way in the future thanks to Discovery, and other perspectives were also explored thanks to The Lower Decks and Prodigy. Almost all of these were found on Paramount+.

In 2025, new Star Trek adventures will be arriving on Paramount+. While there is word that new theatrical films are on the way, until there are trailers and release dates, those continue to be movies fans wish for. Thankfully, some confirmed arrivals are coming to Paramount+ in the coming year. One of these is VERY soon! With that in mind, let’s look at what new Star Trek is coming in 2025!

Star Trek: Section 31

Star Trek: Section 31 premieres on Paramount+ on January 24, 2025. This is the first Star Trek arrival on Paramount+ of the year. It stars Michelle Yeoh as Georgiou, the role she originated in Star Trek: Discovery. She has joined the secretive Section 31 division within Starfleet. There, she is tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets and also finds herself facing the sins of her past.

This series is taking Star Trek boldly into a new approach to storytelling. It is a much darker approach to the world of Star Trek than generally is taken. There have been some moments and storylines that have gone darker, like in Star Trek: Picard. However, this appears to be the first time the complete series goes this dark and focuses this heavily on action. This is in contrast to most Star Trek movies and series that are focused on optimism and the possibilities of what the future could bring. It is still very possible that this does have a goal of optimism with a difficult path to getting there for Georgiou and her team.

There will be some interesting nods to other Star Trek stories throughout this series. In the trailer for the film, a member of the Cheron species was shown (originally from Star Trek: The Original Series). The series also has a younger Rachel Garrett (Captain Garrett of the Enterprise-C in Star Trek: The Next Generation). A Chameloid also appeared in the trailer (the species of Martia in Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country).

The connections to other series shown in the Star Trek: Section 31 trailer were explored here.

Along with Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh, Star Trek: Section 31 has a solid cast. She is joined by Omari Hardwick (Power), Emmy winner Sam Richardson (Ted Lasso), Robert Kazinsky (Pacific Rim), Kacey Rohl (Hannibal), Sven Ruygrok (One Piece), James Hiroyuki Liao (Barry), Humberly Gonzalez (Ginny & Georgia) and Joe Pingue (The Expanse). Miku Martineau (Kate) portrays a young Philippa Georgiou. The film is directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi. The screenplay was written by Craig Sweeny from a story by Bo Yeon Kim and Erika Lippoldt

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

The third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is expected to arrive on Paramount+ in 2025. If things continue as the first season has, expect Captain Pike (Anson Mount) and crew to return in the late spring or early summer (May-June). If the first two seasons of Strange New Worlds are any indication, this next season of Strange New Worlds is something to be excited about! Beyond that, a fourth season has already been confirmed as well!

At the end of season two, Captain Pike and the crew of the Enterprise were facing off against the Gorn and it didn’t look good. This was almost a Kobayashi Maru situation for Captain Pike, who had been ordered to retreat. An early look at season three was revealed earlier this year that showed Pike not his normal confident and cool self. However with La’an Noonien Singh (Christina Chong), Joseph M’Benga (Babs Olusanmokun), Sam Kirk (Dan Jeannotte), and others all held captive by the Gorn, one can expect Captain Pike and the Enterprise to save the day. As seen in the preview, before retreating, the Enterprise rams the Gorn and leaves a homing device before making a hasty departure. It isn’t known how this battle will end up or how far into the season this conflict will go. It will definitely be exciting, though!

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds - Vulcan Episode

Looking forward to the season, there will apparently be an episode where several of the crew become completely Vulcan. This includes Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush), Captain Pike, Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), and La’an. Things go wrong when the serum to return to human doesn’t work. This will presumably lead to some amusing moments as a solution is found. This also indicates that there is a satisfying ending to the conflict with the Gorn at one level or another. Co-creator Akiva Goldsman has also confirmed that season 3 will see the production team exploring some more genres of storytelling. After doing a musical in season 2, expect at least an episode that is an homage to the Hollywood murder-mystery genre in the upcoming season.

There are also some fun new cast members coming to Star Trek: Strange New Worlds for the third season. This includes Cillian O’Sullivan in the role of Dr. Roger Korby. Dr. Korby first appeared in Star Trek: The Original Series in the episode What Are Little Girls Made Of? In it, he was Nurse Chapel’s (Majel Barrett) long-lost fiance. The twist in this episode is that (spoiler alert) Korby (Michael Strong) turns out to be an android. He had been lost on Exo III five years earlier. There, he found an ancient civilization that built androids in their own image and wanted to replace ALL living things with robots. In the end, it turned out that a dying Dr. Korby had transferred his consciousness into an android of his likeness. Because of this, it could be said that fans have never seen Dr. Korby on screen. Presumably, season three will see the beginning of the story arc of the love story between Nurse Chapel and Cillian O’Sullivan’s Dr. Korby. This could also lead to the story of how Dr. Korby disappeared.

Not technically a new cast member as he was introduced at the end of season two, Montgomery Scott (Martin Quinn) will be making regular appearances in the third season of Strange New Worlds. After helping save the day in the last episode of season two, he will be a series regular for this upcoming season. This will presumably lead him closer to becoming the chief engineer of the Enterprise.

Paul Wesley Captain Kirk - Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

The season will also see the return of Paul Wesley’s James T. Kirk as well. During the season, the friendship between Kirk and Spock will be explored. This will see the relationship of these two opposites that complement each other develop throughout the season. Wesley has already confirmed that he will be returning for season four of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Finally, it has been revealed that Rhys Darby will be appearing in season 3 of Strange New Worlds. What hasn’t been revealed is what his role will be. However, his character will be one that is already known in the Star Trek universe and not a new character for the series. There are several possibilities for who Darby could be portraying. This includes:

  • Dr. McCoy – Chief Medical Officer aboard the Enterprise in Star Trek: The Original Series
  • Dr. Piper – One time Chief Medical Officer aboard the Enterprise in Where No Man Has Gone Before from Star Trek: The Original Series
  • Sybok – Spock’s older brother
  • Kang – A Klingon from Star Trek: The Original Series
  • Trelane – A Q-like being that appeared in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode The Squire of Gothos
  • Gary Mitchell – The navigator of the Enterprise in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode Where No Man Has Gone Before, he gains enhanced ESP powers after the Enterprise encounters the Galactic Barrier
  • Tobin Dax – the second host of the Dax symbiont

While it could be any of these characters or others that haven’t been considered yet that Darby could be portraying, Sybok or Trelane seem like early front runners. Dr. McCoy is a possibility as well. Strange New Worlds seems to be rounding up the crew of the Enterprise as seen in The Original Series. All of this is speculation, however. There are plenty of characters to choose from in the many Star Trek series and movies.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy

Beyond 2025 on Paramount+

There are several other Star Trek projects coming in the future beyond 2025 to Paramount+. This includes the Star Trek: Starfleet Academy series. This takes place after the events of Star Trek: Discovery in the 32nd century of the Prime Star Trek timeline. It has a solid cast that is building and is expected to arrive in 2026. Cadets are played by Kerrice Brooks, Bella Shepard, George Hawkins, Karim Diané, Zoë Steiner, and Sandro Rosta. They are joined by Holly Hunter as the Captain and Chancellor of Starfleet Academy, Tig Notaro as Jett Reno, and Robert Picardo as the Doctor.

There is also an untitled live-action comedy in the works. This is being developed by Star Trek: Lower Decks actress and Starfleet Academy writer Tawny Newsome and Dear White People creator Justin Simien. The series will be set in the 25th century and follow two people’s daily lives working on a resort planet. These lives also turn out to be broadcast to an entire quadrant and its people. This could be like The Office or Community mixed with The Truman Show. Only time will tell. A release date has not been revealed for this project.
