So What Do You Think?

Star Trek: Section 31 definitely takes a different approach to Star Trek than has been traditionally taken. This film has lots of action and appears quite a bit darker than other Star Trek films. However, it also looks like it is balanced with humor. There doesn’t appear to be a hero ship that is almost a character in this film like Enterprise, Voyager, or Discovery. This could end up being proved wrong when the movie arrives on Paramount+, however. Overall, this trailer almost looks like it is going to be Star Trek’s version of Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts*. It looks like it has the potential to be a fun movie to watch. It sure looks like Emperor Philippa Georgiou, now a Section 31 agent of some sort, seems to be having fun as she attempts to save the galaxy from this new threat.

Star Trek Nods in the Trailer

Some fun Star Trek connections appear in this trailer as well. First off, there is a member of the Cheron species. This is a species that was introduced in Star Trek: The Original Series in the 1969 episode, Let That Be Your Last Battlefield. In this episode, there was a racial conflict based on which side of the planet’s inhabitants had black and white on their faces. One race of the two openly discriminated against the other. The end of the episode painted a bleak future for the two species that couldn’t overcome their disdain for each other. However, this trailer seems to tease that the future isn’t what it seems…

Another interesting nod is in the form of Kacey Rohl as Rachel Garrett. Star Trek fans will recognize this young version of Garrett as the future captain of the Enterprise-C as seen in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Her version of the Enterprise was from 22 years earlier. It appears that this version of Garrett is in her early 30s, meaning this could put the events of Star Trek: Section 31 approximately three decades before the events of Star Trek: The Next Generation. But then again… time travel.

There is also a Chameloid that appears in this trailer. Previously this species was only seen in Star Trek: The Undiscovered Country in the form of Martia. In Section 31 the Chameloid is named Quasi and played by Sam Richardson. Hopefully, Quasi’s ending is better than Martia’s.

It also shouldn’t be forgotten that the title and premise itself are a nod to the secretive division of Starfleet Intelligence. It is tasked with protecting the security interests of the United Earth and, later, the United Federation of Planets. It has appeared in multiple Star Trek series through the years including its introduction in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. It appeared in multiple series in the following years up through Star Trek: Picard. The division also appeared in Star Trek Into Darkness. It has always operated in the shadows and often used less-than-savory tactics to achieve its goals.

A New Star Trek Adventure

Star Trek: Section 31 will be arriving exclusively on Paramount+ on January 24, 2025. It promises to be a new type of Star Trek adventure for fans to experience. It will arrive just after a month after Star Trek: Lower Decks finishes its five-season run. At this point, this will be the only new Star Trek on Paramount+ in 2025. In 2026, the next season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and the first season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will arrive on the streaming service. An untitled Star Trek origin movie is also slated to release in 2026 currently.
