On this day in 1959, the Matterhorn Bobsleds opened at Disneyland, along with the Monorail and the Submarine Voyage. Disney’s scale version of the real Matterhorn in Switzerland stands 147 feet tall. It has two separate tracks that were laid out by Imagineer Bob Gurr, a project he cites as his most complicated. The bobsleds run on tubular steel tracks with urethane wheels, the first system of its kind. The same company that built the Matterhorn’s steel structure also constructed the Bay Bridge in San Francisco! [65 years ago in 2024]
