Disney+ Releasing Beach Boys Documentary

Just in time for the summer season to begin, “The Beach Boys,” a documentary about the iconic band, will premiere on Disney+ on May 24.

They were formed in Hawthorne, CA in 1961. The group’s original lineup consisted of brothers Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine. The group was known for their vocal harmonies, adolescent-oriented lyrics, and musical ingenuity. The Beach Boys are one of the most critically acclaimed and successful bands of all time, selling over 100 million records worldwide. They helped legitimize popular music as a recognized art form and influenced the development of music genres and movements such as psychedelia, power pop, progressive rock, punk, and alternative. Between the 1960s and 2020s, the group had 37 songs reach the US Top 40 charts, which is the most by an American band.

This documentary is described as “a celebration of the legendary band that revolutionized pop music and the iconic, harmonious sound they created that personified the California dream, captivating fans for generations and generations to come.”

“The Beach Boys” will include never-before-seen footage and new interviews with band members Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, David Marks and Bruce Johnston, as well as music stars like Lindsey Buckingham, Janelle Monáe, Ryan Tedder and Don Was. Former members Carl and Dennis Wilson, Blondie Chaplin and Ricky Fataar are also participating.

“The Beach Boys” is directed by Frank Marshall and Thom Zimny, written by Mark Monroe, and produced by Kennedy/Marshall and White Horse Pictures. Producers include Marshall, Irving Azoff, Nicholas Ferrall, Jeanne Elfant Festa and Aly Parker. Executive producers are Nigel Sinclair, Mark Monroe, Tony Rosenthal, Cassidy Hartmann, Glen Zipper, Thom Zimny, Beth Collins, Jimmy Edwards, Susan Genco, Marc Cimino, Jody Gerson, Bruce Resnikoff and Ben J. Murphy.

The documentary’s soundtrack will be available to stream alongside the film’s premiere on May 24. Coinciding with the documentary’s debut, the Beach Boys’ 1964 album “Shut Down Vol. 2” will be released on limited edition blue-and-white marble vinyl on March 29. The group’s official book, “The Beach Boys by the Beach Boys,” will also release on April 2 via Genesis Publications.

Disney+ recently released Taylor Swift’s “Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version)” concert movie on its platform. The concert movie set a new record with 4.6 million views in its first three days. The streamer also released Peter Jackson’s the Beatles docuseries “Get Back” in 2021.
