Another new Star Trek film is reportedly in the works. This one is set to be directed by Andor director Toby Haynes. Haynes will be directing this new original Star Trek film that is going to have a script written by Seth Grahame-Smith. The film is said to be a new “origin story” that will take place decades before the events of 2009’s Star Trek. J.J. Abrams’ company Bad Robot is set to produce this film for Paramount as well.
This new Star Trek film would be the first film in development since 2016’s Star Trek Beyond. This film was directed by Justin Lin and starred Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto. Since then, there have been several attempts at getting a movie into theaters that have not gotten off the ground. This includes one from Quentin Tarantino and another from Noah Hawley.
There is also another Star Trek movie in the works, known commonly as Star Trek 4. This one would bring back Pine and Quinto to the roles of Captain Kirk and Spock. Originally, WandaVision‘s Matt Shakman was set to direct this film but has since left the project to instead direct Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four. A replacement director has not yet been named for Star Trek 4.
Haynes already has experience directing sci-fi. He has directed Andor, Doctor Who, and even Sherlock. He also directed the Black Mirror episode USS Callister. This episode was set in a Star Trek-inspired universe. If this new movie is an origin story of some sort, it will be interesting to see how this is done and if it is still in the Kelvin Universe. Depending on when this story takes place in the timeline, it could be before the Kevlin timeline branches off. Depending on how far back it goes, it could even connect with the Enterprise series and Captain Archer conceivably.
Daps Magic will continue to follow the progress on this movie and provide updates as they become available. What do you think about this new Star Trek film? Do you think it is a good idea? Are you excited to see it? Share your thoughts and opinions in the comments below!
