The Marvels did not go higher, further, or faster at the box office on its opening weekend. As the numbers are coming in, the latest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to bring in $47 million domestically at the box office. The film did slightly better overseas where it garnered $63.3 million. This brings the global total to around $110.3 million.
With a production budget reportedly of $200 million, this is not as strong of a start as Marvel Studios undoubtably wanted for the film. It hasn’t been receiving the reception that the studio would have hoped for. It’s Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score was only 62 percent and the film received only a B CinemaScore. Time will tell how this movie performs longterm.
The box office results for The Marvels adds to the theory that there is superhero fatigue. This is due to all of the titles in the genre that are being pumped out. This causes weariness for fans of the genre and also leads to less forgiveness for individual films. This could be recognized by the company as Disney CEO Bob Iger has said recently that its many studios will be backing off how many titles it releases and instead focus on quality. This comes after other movies from The Walt Disney Company have had less-than-stellar performances at the box office. The Walt Disney Company is the parent company of Marvel Studios as well.
The Marvels is the sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel. This film had a $153.4 million opening weekend in North America. It would go on to make $1.13 billion globally at the box office. Captain Marvel did have the advantage of being teased in Avengers: Infinity War. The title characters also would go on to appear in Avengers: Endgame as well.
Before the release of The Marvels, the lowest opening weekend for a Marvel Studios film was The Incredible Hulk with its $54.4 million. At the time, Marvel was not owned by Disney yet and Marvel partnered with Universal to release it. The next lowest was Ant-Man, which brought in $57.2 million domestically in 2015.
The Marvels sees Brie Larson return as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel. She is joined this time around by Iman Vellani from Ms. Marvel and Teyonah Parris as the adult Monica Rambeau, a role she first had in WandaVision.

In The Marvels, Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as “The Marvels.”
The film stars Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, Iman Vellani, Zawe Ashton, Gary Lewis, Seo-Jun Park, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, Saagar Shaikh, and Samuel L. Jackson. Nia DaCosta directs, and Kevin Feige is the producer. Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Mary Livanos and Matthew Jenkins serve as executive producers. The screenplay is by Nia DaCosta and Megan McDonnell and Elissa Karasik.
