The arrival of the 3rd season finale of Only Murders in the Building was just this week. Along with the arrival of the finale comes the news that the 4th season of the series has been approved.
Only Murders in the Building follows the adventures of three amateur sleuths, Charles Haden-Savage (Steve Martin), Oliver Putnam (Martin Short) and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez). The three live in an apartment building called the Arconia and in season 1 they came together to record a true crime podcast about a murder in their building. Since then, the three have grown as friends and continued to solve murder mysteries each season. This season saw them seeking out the answers for the death of an actor named Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd) who died on the opening night of Oliver’s play, in which he was the star.
Steve Martin and John Hoffman are co-creators of Only Murders in the Building. Hoffman shared with Variety about the third season themes in the series saying, “All of the anxieties and all of the funny stresses are there to exemplify that thing we can all understand and connect to when you want something so badly. You feel like, ‘This is what I’m meant to do.’ How far would you go? That’s the question right off the top of the season: how far would you go to hold onto it?”
Only Murders in the Building has been a solid hit for Hulu for all three of its seasons to date. It is the most-watched original comedy series to date for the streamer. It’s third season had the most-watched premiere day of any Hulu scripted original in 2023 to date. According to Nielson, the show was the 9th most watched show during its opening week. It also was the 3rd most watched for a streaming original series. Since then it has remained in the top six.
