Disney Cruise Line’s Singapore-Based Ship to Be Named Disney Adventure

Last year Disney acquired a cruise ship that hadn’t been completed yet. The ship is being completed at the Meyer Werft shipbuilding company. Once finished, it will be based in Singapore and be the first Disney Cruise Line ship to enter the Asian market. Formerly, the ship was known as the Global Dream. During Destination D23‘s “A Celebration of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow” panel, hosted by Disney Parks, Experiences and Products Chairman Josh D’Amaro, it was announced that this new ship will be named the Disney Adventure. The announcement was made by Disney Cruise Line President Thomas Mazloum. During the announcement he said, “With a name that evokes the very spirit of exploration, the Disney Adventure will take families on a fantastical voyage across a sea of Disney, Pixar and Marvel stories, venturing into realms representing every corner of the Disney world – and beyond.”

The Disney Adventure will be based in Singapore. It will have destinations throughout Southeast Asia. It is expected to be based in Singapore for at least five years. It will also be the largest ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet when it takes to the sea with guests in 2025.

The ship was purchased last year by for 40 million euros ($41 million). Upon the time of purchase, it was reportedly 75% complete. “Our cruise ships give us the unique opportunity to bring Disney magic to fans no matter where they are, and the addition of this ship will make a Disney Cruise Line vacation accessible to more families than ever before,” said Josh D’Amaro, chairman, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products said at the time of the purchase.

The ship will be completed at the Wismar shipyard by Meyer Werft, where it had been under construction prior to MV Werften going under. The shipyard also went into insolvency at the time. The shipyard was then sold to ThyssenKrupp MarineSystems, a submarine builder, who will take over the property in 2025. This ship is expected to be the final cruise ship to be built at the property.

Once completed, the Disney Adventure will be painted with the iconic Mickey Mouse-inspired colors of the fleet. This will include the red funnels on top. The 208,000-gross-ton ship is expected to be among the first in the cruise industry to be fueled by green methanol, one of the lowest emission fuels available. Disney Cruise Line expects the passenger capacity to be approximately 6,000 with around 2,300 crew members.

The news about the name of the Disney Adventure comes just days after a big reveal for the next ship to enter the Disney Cruise Line fleet, the Disney Treasure. This ship will be taking guests on its inaugural voyage on December 21, 2024.
