On last week’s shareholder call, Disney CFO Christine McCarthy shared that Disney would be removing titles from Disney+ in the near future. “We are in the process of reviewing the content on our DTC services to align with the strategic changes in our approach to content curation,” McCarthy shared on the May 10th quarterly shareholder call.
It appears that the near future will be starting on May 26 and that the content being removed from Disney+ will be dozens of titles including Willow, Big Shot, Turner & Hooch, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, Just Beyond, Diary of a Future President, The Mysterious Benedict Society and The World According to Jeff Goldblum and Hulu’s Y: The Last Man, Dollface, The Hot Zone, Maggie, Pistol and Little Demon.
Most of the titles that are being removed from Disney+ appear to be series and movies that were made for Disney’s streaming services. Their removal will incur a $1.5 billion to $1.8 billion impairment charge. This move follows the move of other streamers who have also removed content from their services. This includes Warner Bros. Discovery’s removal of titles from HBO Max along with AMC and Showtime as well.
