Disney and Pixar have shared details about its upcoming feature film, Elemental. The film will be released on June 16, 2023, and will be Pixar’s 27th animated feature. This film is directed by Peter Sohn. He also directed The Good Dinosaur and the Partly Cloudy short. It is produced by Denise Ream, who produced The Good Dinosaur and Cars 2. This film will follow Pixar’s Lightyear which is coming to theaters on June 17, 2022.
An Elemental Description
Disney and Pixar released a description of the film, along with some concept art. “The film journeys alongside an unlikely pair, Ember and Wade, in a city where fire-, water-, land- and air-residents live together. The fiery young woman and the go-with-the-flow guy are about to discover something elemental: how much they actually have in common.“
The Elemental Inspiration
The inspiration behind the film comes from real-life experience. Sohn shared that Elemental is a completely original film that was inspired by his childhood in New York. “My parents emigrated from Korea in the early 1970s and built a bustling grocery store in the Bronx,” said the director. “We were among many families who ventured to a new land with hopes and dreams—all of us mixing into one big salad bowl of cultures, languages and beautiful little neighborhoods. That’s what led me to ‘Elemental.’”
“Our story is based on the classic elements—fire, water, land and air,” Sohn continued. “Some elements mix with each other, and some don’t. What if these elements were alive?”
At this point, it hasn’t been announced where Elemental will be released. Recent Pixar films have been released directly to Disney+. However, Lightyear is getting a theatrical release this June. However, at this point, Disney has just shared that the release date for Elemental is June 16, 2023.
