When Toy Story 4 hits theaters this July, we may leave hungry for more Pixar storytelling. You may be anticipating more sequels after we’ve seen The Incredibles Story and Dory come to life with prequels and sequels. Today, Pete Docter announced that in the future, when you sit down in theaters to watch a Pixar film, it will be full of completely original storylines!
This is all part of the newest era of the film studio. When Docter, who helmed films such as Up and Inside Out, took over the studio, he wanted to breathe new life into Pixar. It seems like he’s doing just that! Producer Mark Nielsen says that there’s “a lot of optimism about the future of the studio (…) He’s really looking out for the new voices and really loading up the development pool,” Nielsen says, adding, “It’s all original films after this one right now.”
With looking out for new voices come stories of diversity as we’ve never seen before. Notably, Bao and Sanjay’s Super Team focused on cultures and stories that Pixar had never told before. Domee Shi worked on the former of the two shorts and it was announced earlier this year that she will be directing her own Pixar film. This will mark the first time a woman has ever fully directed a film to completion, as Brave’s director was separated from the project before completion.
