Steve Whitmire No Longer With The Muppets

Steve Whitmire Says Goodbye to The Muppets

Since 1990, Kermit the Frog has been partnered with Muppeteer Steve Whitmire. This is no longer true. The legendary performer is no longer with The Muppets according to Muppet Mindset and ToughPigs. Whitmire has performed Kermit the Frog, Rizzo the Rat, Statler, Bean Bunny, Beaker and others throughout the years. As The Muppets have been producing more online content, these characters have been noticeably absent. In particular, Kermit has not made any appearances in the Muppets Though of the Week.

Tough Pigs reached out to Disney for confirmation of Whitmire’s departure and the following facts were confirmed:

  • Steve Whitmire is no longer working with the Muppets.
  • Matt Vogel will be the new performer for Kermit the Frog.
  • We will be seeing Matt’s first footage as Kermit in a “Muppets Thought of the Week” video next week.

There really isn’t a whole lot more known about Steve Whitmire’s departure. Perhaps details will never be known. What is known is that he joined The Muppet Show in 1978. He took up the mantel of Kermit the Frog in 1990.

Kermit the Frog will now be performed by Matt Vogel. Vogel joined The Muppets in 1996 and has really made a name for himself since then. He currently carries on the legacy of Floyd, Lew Zealand, and The Count. He also performed, ironically, the character of Constantine in Muppets Most Wanted. It will be interesting to see how he carried on the legacy of Kermit the Frog.
