Once Upon A Time is renewed for a seventh season on ABC. This news does come after Jennifer Morrison announced she would not return if it were renewed. Colin O’Donoghue, her on screen husband Captain Hook, will return for Season 7. In addition to O’Donoghue, Lana Parrilla – Regina/Evil Queen and Robert Carlyle – Rumplestiltskin/Mr. Gold will be returning as well. Ginnifer Goodwin – Snow White and Josh Dallas – Prince Charming will not return as regulars either.
The show will undergo a reboot in the next season. It will center around newcomers Andrew J. West and Alison Fernandez. Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, the show’s creators and producers, have planned the reboot for a while. It’s not known how many original characters will return to the seventh season. Kitsis and Horowitz have said that they have planned endpoints for characters in the sixth season finale. They promise that loose ends will be tied, and it will be pleasing for fans.
The show has had a ratings drop for the sixth season, but ABC has strong license with Netflix that the renewal will make sense for streaming platforms as well as television this next year.
Having been a longtime viewer, I think a reboot will be a great thing for the show. Keeping some of the same characters, but doing something different than before will breathe life into the show. The “universe” that has been set up is strong and vast. There is much potential for characters and direction of story. It will be interesting on if the newcomers will be as strong as the cast before. It will also be interesting to have Hook and not as much Emma. Although, we don’t know what will happen in the season finale yet. As of now they are married, and it doesn’t seem like the happy ending will be broken up.
