Lion King Becomes One of the Top Grossing Domestic Films of All Time

The 3D release of The Lion King has taken Simba and his friends to a whole new level in the movie industry. The Lion King is now one of the top ten grossing films of all time. Just the 3D release of this Disney classic has made over $98.7 million worldwide including $79.7 million in North America. Joining Shrek 2 and Toy Story 3The Lion King becomes the third animated movie ever to make it onto the list of top ten grossing movies.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the top ten grossing movies domestically are:

  • Avatar – $760.5 million
  • Titanic – $600.8 million
  • The Dark Knight – $533.3 million
  • Star Wars – $461 million
  • Shrek 2 / E.T. – $435.1 million
  • Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace – $431.1 million
  • Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest – $423.3 million
  • Toy Story 3  – $415 million
  • The Lion King  – $408.2 million
To reach the top ten, The Lion King knocked Spider Man off of the number 10 spot at $403.7 million.
