On this day in 1911, nine-year-old Walt Disney entered Benton Grammar School in Kansas City, Missouri, following his family’s move from Marceline. Walt had a hard time paying attention in school, mostly because he woke up at 3 AM every day to deliver newspapers. Even so, he devoured books and took up cartooning at school, sometimes even during lectures. Walt’s 1917 commencement from Benton was his only school graduation. He credited the school and his favorite seventh-grade teacher, Daisy Beck, for inspiring his creativity and love of learning. [115 years ago in 2026]
