In 2027, the 50th anniversary of Star Wars will be celebrated by fans around the world. As part of the celebration, Star Wars (1977) will be returning to theaters in its original form. Not only will it be shown once again on the silver screen, but this classic film will also be presented in IMAX 70mm when it is re-released in 2027.
The re-release of Star Wars (1977) marks the first time that the film will be presented in IMAX for the first time ever, either digitally or on film. This will be included with its re-release on February 19, 2027. As part of Lucasfilm’s yearlong 50th anniversary celebration, the newly restored version of the original movie that would later be renamed Star Wars: A New Hope will be screened at a select number of IMAX 70mm film locations, along with playing in theaters for a limited time.
Star Wars (1977) isn’t the only film from the franchise to get an IMAX 70mm release, however. On May 28, 2027, the 50th anniversary weekend of the original film’s premiere, Lucasfilm will be releasing Star Wars: Starfighter. This movie was filmed for IMAX release and shot with IMAX-certified film cameras. Then, it was converted to IMAX 70mm for a release in a select number of IMAX film locations. This movie is an all-new standalone Star Wars adventure. It is directed and produced by Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine, Stranger Things). It stars Ryan Gosling (Drive, Blade Runner, La La Land, The Place Beyond the Pines, Barbie) as Kade Auberon. The following description has been shared for the film:
In Star Wars: Starfighter, when a cynical rogue is confronted by his mysterious past, he is hurled into a dangerous adventure across the galaxy that puts him on a crash course with destiny.
Also starring in the film are Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, Flynn Gray, and Amy Adams. Starfighter is written by Jonathan Tropper, produced by Shawn Levy and Kathleen Kennedy, with Ryan Gosling, Mary McLaglen, Josh McLaglen, Dave Filoni, and Dan Levine serving as executive producers.
