Disney Moana: The Official Cookbook: Pacific Recipes Inspired by Motunui is a cookbook with recipes inspired by Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Moana and Moana 2. This is filled with recipes that are inspired by Motunui, the fictional island home of the Disney character Moana. This cookbook is written by Monique Fiso. Fiso is internationally known for her cultural stewardship of Māori and Pasifika food. This isn’t just a fun cookbook that has some delicious recipes; it is also educational. It has Pacific recipes that open a new culinary world to those who may not be familiar with all of them.
Structure
This cookbook is divided in a very natural way. It makes it very easy to navigate and find recipes based on what one is looking for. This includes:
- Snacks
- Mains
- Sides
- Sweets
- Beverages
Throughout the cookbook, there are not just types of foods to cook based on what part of a meal or snack one is trying to make. There are also some tips for being successful with each recipe. Some of these come down to something as simple as how to pick and/or prepare different fruits (for example, a papaya). There are also difficulty rankings to help make decisions about what is accessible to make.
Thoughts
Moana: The Official Cookbook is a fun recipe book that has a wide variety of offerings found in it. This book is billed as being something that could expand the horizons of cooks and those who eat the cooked food. This is definitely true. I’m not an expert when it comes to Pacific cuisine. I do feel like this provides some good direction that introduces this cuisine to my kitchen. While perusing this cookbook, I found multiple recipes that I tabbed for later use. While this is a great cookbook for a Moana-themed night, it is also just a great cookbook. It is one that I will be returning too and would not be surprised if a recipe is reviewed for the Geek Eats podcast in the future!
