First Gigablock for Disney Believe Floats Out in Germany

The Disney Believe is the next ship that will join the Disney Cruise Line. “This ship celebrates belief in magic, family, the power of nature, and belief in yourself,” Imagineer Claire Weiss said at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event. “And all the stories we tell onboard will be tied together by the core Disney notion of believing in something fantastical.”

Ahead of joining the Disney Cruise Line fleet in late 2027, Walt Disney Imagineering and the Disney Cruise Line revealed a major update about this next ship. This revealed how this ship is being built. It is utilizing a technology called gigablock. Disney Signature Experiences President Natacha Rafalski shared that the Disney Believe is the first ship to be built using gigablocks since the Disney Wish.

This week, the first of what will be three gigablocks that make up the ship was revealed to the world. This was done when the completed gigablock was floated out of the Meyer Werft Shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. The reveal of this gigablock marks a milestone in the construction of the Disney Believe.

This gigablock is one of three that will be put together to build the Disney Believe. Ships built using this process see large sections of them (the gigablocks) built individually. A completed gigablock has walls, plumbing, and wiring. Once all of the sections are completed, they are welded together to complete the ship. Each gigablock can weigh over 31,000 tons and can float independently of each other in and around the shipyard before being joined with the others.

The first gigablock that was revealed on Friday is the midship section of the Disney Believe. This is where some familiar places aboard the ship will ultimately be found and enjoyed by guests. This includes the Grand Hall. Disney shared that the next gigablock that will be constructed will be the forward portion of the ship. Finally, the aft portion will be built.
