Ryman Arts is celebrating the legacy of its namesake during a special event at the Bowers Museum. This will include a screening of Disneyland Handcrafted.
Herb Ryman encouraged young artists throughout his long career as an artist, designer, and Imagineer at Walt Disney Studios. After his death, his friends and family established Ryman Arts in 1989 to carry on his philosophy of teaching foundation skills of drawing and painting, and his commitment to encouraging young artists to reach their full potential.
Ryman Arts continues to process Herb Ryman’s extensive archive of photographs, documents, and artifacts from his career as a painter and concept designer for films and theme parks. This is in an effort to preserve his creative process and make the archives and artwork collection accessible to scholars and the public. Herb cared deeply about the education of artists and is an integral link to Disney’s artistic heritage. Ryman Arts hopes his art will continue to delight and inspire others.
Disney fans are invited to join Ryman Arts for a special evening at the Bowers Museum. This event is inspired by the legacy of artist and designer Herbert D. Ryman, whose vision helped bring Disneyland to life. This event connects the artistry, imagination, mentorship, and craftsmanship that have shaped Disneyland’s past, present, and future, and that continue to shape the next generation of artists today.
Ryam Arts aims to “celebrate the power of art to create extraordinary experiences, inspire lifelong memories, and open pathways for young artists to imagine and build what comes next.”
About The Event
The special evening begins with a cocktail reception at the Bowers Museum. Guests will then enjoy a private screening of Disneyland Handcrafted, the feature documentary directed by Academy Award-nominated Leslie Iwerks and produced by Mark Catalena, that reveals how Disneyland came to be. Founded on dreams, conceptualized by artists, and built by craftspeople, Disneyland has become a world-renowned destination where imagination comes to life.
The evening culminates in a dynamic discussion moderated by Tim O’Day and featuring panelists Mark Catalena (Producer, Disneyland Handcrafted) and Tom Morris (former Walt Disney Imagineering Executive), and Emo O’Brien (Portfolio Executive Creative Producer, Walt Disney Imagineering). With an introduction by Joshua You (Ryman ’19, Concept Artist for Walt Disney Imagineering), guests will learn more about the collaboration and mentorship that enable artists to create imaginative stories and worlds to share with audiences across the globe.
This event will take place Sunday, September 27 from 3-6pm at the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana.
Proceeds support Ryman Arts, which offers tuition-free arts education, supplies, transportation, mentorship, and college and career guidance for young artists across Southern California.
