On this day in 2001, Studio Ghibli’s modern classic ‘Spirited Away’ was released. Young “Sen” works to free herself and her parents after unintentionally entering the spirit world of the “kami.” John Lasseter, a friend of director Hayao Miyazaki, convinced Disney to purchase the North American distribution rights and was executive producer for the English-dubbed version. ‘Spirited Away’ is considered one of the greatest animated films ever made. It won an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, the first non-English language film to do so. [25 years ago in 2026]
