‘Spirited Away’ Director Hayao Miyazaki Retiring

Hayao Miyazaki Retiring

Oscar winning director Hayao Miyazaki is retiring. On Sunday at the Venice Film Festival he said during a press conference that The Wind Rises, Miyazaki’s latest animated featured film, will be his last project.

“Miyazaki has decided that Kaze tachinu (The Wind Rises) will be his last film, and he will now retire.” said Koju Hoshino, president of Miyazaki’s production company, Studio Ghibli. Questions were not taken but Hoshino indicated that more questions will be answered at a future press event in Tokyo next week.

Miyazaki is a legend within the animation community.  He rose to fame during the 1970’s with his work on anime. Since then he has created nearly a dozen films. He earned an Oscar for his Spirited Away. Speculation is already starting to build about the chances of The Wind Rises to earn him a second Oscar.

His current movie, The Wind Rises tells the story of Jiro Horikoshi, the engineer of the Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighter plane the Japanese used in World War II. It was well received at the Venice Film Festival. It will be released by Disney’s Touchstone Pictures in the USA but no release date has been announced yet.
