How does everything stay in a roller coaster when it goes upside down? | Imagineer That! Official Description

Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets is now open at Disney’s Hollywood Studios! To celebrate the occasion, Tom Morrow 2.0 is answering the classic question – how does everything stay in a roller coaster when it goes upside down? This time around, he has a little help from Lips, trumpet player for The Electric Mayhem, as long as Joe from Legal doesn’t shut this episode down…

What you’ll learn:

  • Roller coasters keep riders and objects in place using physics principles like inertia and centripetal force, which work together to guide motion through loops and prevent things from falling out.
  • Inertia makes your body want to move in a straight line, while centripetal force from the track pulls you along the curved path.
  • As long as the ride maintains enough speed and rotation, everything stays secured — but if motion stops, gravity takes over.

Imagineer That! originally debuted at EPCOT’s Innoventions and appeared as an early-2000s Disney Channel segment. Tom Morrow 2.0 retired from his Innoventions days in 2007. Fans were delighted nearly two decades later when the segment was brought back in 2025 on YouTube. Once again, he is finding answers to the questions that Disney fans have from the world of Walt Disney Imagineering. New episodes are released approximately once a month.
