Downtown Disney District was the place to be on Friday night. The west end of the District came to life in the evening as Disney on the Yard took over the Downtown Disney LIVE! Stage and the area around it, as Yardfest 2026 celebrated the spirit and traditions of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). By the time things got going at 5:00 PM, the area was packed with people eager to enjoy the night.

The evening was hosted by Mel Mitchell and Obie Jones, both #DisneyPowerofJoy content creators. Dj Quami brought the music that led to plenty of dancing and smiles. Others on hand brought energy and joy to the evening. A highlight of the night was the three appearances of Drum Major Mickey Mouse with the drum line from Texas Southern University Ocean of Soul Marching Band. Drum Major Mickey and the drum line made appearances at 5:30 PM, 7:00 PM, and 8:15 PM. Drum Major Mickey was trained by 6 HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) drum majors to ensure he had those high knees and that infamous backbend.
There were plenty of other fun activities to enjoy throughout the night as well. This included trivia moments, an area with games for the whole family to play, and a Disney on the Yard booth. The booth had information about Disney on the Yard, gave away freebies, and also had information about becoming a Cast Member. There was also special food available throughout the night, and the new cart, Happy Ice, had officially opened earlier in the day just steps from the stage.

The whole atmosphere of Yardfest 2026 was that of a massive party. It had the feeling of New Year’s Eve, but in many ways even more joyful. With the event happening on Juneteenth, the energy seemed to be amplified even more.
While Disney on the Yard took over the west end of the Downtown Disney District for Yardfest 2026, it is just the tip of the iceberg of what it does. This is a community for HBCU alumni across The Walt Disney Company. Those who join can explore internships, mentorships, and career growth opportunities that are available for students and graduates. The best place to connect with Disney on the Yard is via Instagram at: @Disneyontheyard.
Disney on the Yard: Yardfest is an incredible event at the Disneyland Resort. It is full of joy, positivity, and fun! It kicks off a month of Celebrate Gospel: Summer Vibes that runs through July 19, 2026. More information can be found here.
