The Navy Band Southwest was at Disneyland for Memorial Day for a special Patriotic Flag Retreat. Late in the afternoon, the Navy Band joined the Disneyland Resort Security Honor Guard, Dapper Dans, and others for this special moment. This daily tradition, which dates back to the early days of Disneyland, honored current and former Service Members in attendance (and their families), as well as those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the United States of America, as people reflected on the meaning of Memorial Day.

Navy Band Southwest
The Navy Band Southwest is considered one of the finest Navy bands and also one of the oldest continuing musical organizations. It has over 100 years of support of the San Diego community and serves as the musical ambassador for the Commander, Navy Region Southwest. It is currently under the direction of Lieutenant Commander Matthew M. Shea. It is located on the Navy Base San Diego.
The Navy Band Southwest performed an average of 400 times a year, with its 45 members traveling throughout California and seven other states in the region for military funerals, ceremonial support, public events, and concerts. The band includes multiple ensembles, including the Ceremonial Band, Parade Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Combo, Brass Quintet, Woodwind Quintet, Brass Band, and Rock Band. The band was founded in 1923 and is an important part of San Diego’s military heritage. It continues to uphold rich tradition and promotes both pride and professionalism of today’s United States Navy.
Patriotic Flag Retreat
The Patriotic Flag Retreat dates back to the early days of Disneyland. Each day, the flag is retired in the late afternoon, and a moment is taken to honor those who are serving, have served, or have given the ultimate sacrifice in service to the United States of America. This continues a company legacy that began when founders Walt and Roy O. Disney both served their country during World War I. Over 100 years later, the company continues to be dedicated to the country and those who serve.
Disney Celebrates America
Disney is also celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States of America. This is being done through the Disney Celebrates America initiative. This has included special events throughout the year, the opening of Soarin’ Across America, and special celebrations for the 4th of July this summer.
