Happy National Train Day!

Happy National Train Day! Each year, this day is celebrated on the Saturday that is closest to May 10th. It was founded in 2008 by Amtrak. This is the date that the Golden Spike was pounded into the ground at Promontory, Utah. While Amtrak’s official celebration of National Train Day was canceled in 2015, fans and rail enthusiasts continue to celebrate the holiday today.

Trains play a big part in the Disney story. Walt Disney came to California aboard a train with his “suitcase and a dream.” A train was a part of the story of the creation of Mickey Mouse when Walt Disney was traveling back from New York City after losing Oswald to Charles Mintz. A train would end up being built in Walt Disney’s backyard. And then, when Walt Disney opened Disneyland, a train was one of the first things that guests saw as they entered. Today, trains can be found in Disney parks around the globe!

Trains aren’t just a fun way to circle a Disney park and look at what is inside. They also provide kinetic energy to the parks and bring them to life as they steam by. As their powerful engines pull their trains by, they are a reminder of a day gone by, when trains provided hope and inspiration for people seeking a better future. As these trains pick up steam, they are an inspiration to keep moving forward.

There is something magical about a train ride. There is beauty in the simplicity of the engine pulling cars down the rails. There is a connection to Walt Disney, who loved trains himself. Disney trains around the world continue to inspire and entertain fans every day as they see and ride aboard them. They, just like Disneyland itself, are a source of joy and inspiration. Below are a few of my favorite trains from Disney parks around the globe through the years.
