Spaceballs is getting a sequel, and it isn’t getting the name that originally had been suggested: Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money. Instead, the film will be called Spaceballs: The New One. The news was revealed by Mel Brooks in a video that was released by Amazon MGM Studios. In the video, Brooks stops a powerful voice talking about the history of the sequel, saying, “Hold it! Wait a minute, wait a minute! It’s me, Mel Brooks! I have a major announcement.”
Brooks continues by announcing the new title for the film won’t be what he said at the end of the original Spaceballs film. “Why not? Because after all these years, I found the money. There it is. The money. It was in my basement.” As he said this, the camera shows a bag packed full of money. It all feels very in tune with the humor that is known and loved by Mel Brooks fans through the years.
He continues and says, “The title is… Spaceballs: The New One. It’s just like the old one, but it’s newer. That’s why it’s called “The New One.” There you have it. I’ll see you at the movies, and may the Schwartz be with you.” Watch this teaser below!
Spaceballs: The New One sees the return of stars from the original film, including Rick Moranis, George Wyner, Daphne Zuniga, Bill Pullman, and Brooks. They are joined by Lewis Pullman, Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, and Anthony Carrigan. At this point, the new cast members’ roles have not been officially revealed.
All of this news came out of a presentation at CinemaCon. Along with revealing the new title, footage from the film was also shared. This reportedly included a nod to the Na’Vi from the Avatar franchise. A full trailer has not been released for the film yet. Daps Magic will share it when it does get released.
Spaceballs: The New One is directed by Josh Greenbaum from a script by Gad, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez. It has a release date of April 23, 2027, from Amazon MGM Studios. Imagine’s Brian Grazer and Jeb Brody are producing alongside Gad, Brooks, and Greenbaum.
